CUT&PASTE LOS ANGELES 2012

During Cut&Paste LA 2012, we decided to change up the game, challenging three teams of 2D/3D design pros from Los Angeles to face off in a three-round tag-team obstacle course. Motion/Animation designers quickly created one 15-second video each, pre-show, and showed their videos during the competition. Our jury had some tough decisions to make, but after judging the competitors' digital and physical creativity, 1 2D/3D team and 1 motion/animation competitor were chosen as LA champs and will be representing their city at this year's Global Championships in October 2012. Congratulations to Leanne Dare & Paulo de Almada for being our winning 2D/3D team and to Motion/Animation winner Daniel Zhang!

COMPETITOR ARTWORK

2D/3D COMPETITION - THEME: NEIGHBORHOOD PRIDE

In this competition, each team of one 2D designer and one 3D designer was challenged to prepare a pitch concept for a hypothetical short video expressing the theme of NEIGHBORHOOD PRIDE. Teams developed the pitch concept over three onstage rounds of design, culminating in a final styleframe on which each team was most heavily evaluated by the audience and jury. Teams were instructed to convey the heart and soul of a Los Angeles neighborhood including the landscape, people, and cultural elements like food, music, modes of transportation, and the variety of pursuits and activity found in the LA ‘hood.
1: Belinda Rodriguez & Matthew Encina
2: Henry DeLeon & Max Ulichney
3: Leanne Dare & Paulo de Almada

MOTION/ANIMATION COMPETITION - THEME: MYSTICAL

In your eight-hour round, these motion/animation competitors were challenged to create a video that expressed the theme MYSTICAL or that, which transcends human understanding. This theme could be presented as supernatural, spiritually or religiously symbolic.

"DESIGN FOR CLEAN WATER" DESIGN CHALLENGE

This year, we have a special audience design contest in collaboration with charity: water and sponsored by Adobe to drive awareness for an important problem: access to clean water for all.

Right now, one billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water. On mycharity: water, you can run, bike, or give up birthday presents to raise money to fund water projects for communities in need, and 100% of all donations directly funds water projects. Every dollar donation is linked to a water project and proved with photos and GPS. Now, charity: water seeks the help of the Cut&Paste design community for fresh ideas.

Your Challenge: In a 15-minute offstage round, sketch a graphic that represents an activity you would do to raise money for clean water using the iPad and Adobe Ideas app, provided at Cut&Paste. The winner from all global entries receives the opportunity to work on a charity: water campaign. Click for more details.

"MESS WITH JESS" PHOTO DESIGN CHALLENGE

Do you like to play pranks and practical jokes? Well, this year we have a contest hosted by our Los Angeles Sponsor HP called Mess with Jess where you can show us your best prank. Here's how it works:

First, grab some props and get a photo taken playing your best prank, then get 10 minutes using one of the HP Z1 All In One Workstations to fill in the rest of the photo with your most creative sketching and illustrations. The HP Z1 is the latest creative workstation from HP that gives you all of the power, without the tower. There's also some t-shirts up for grabs for anyone that gets involved.

At the end of the night, select images are narrowed for a final vote where the audience will determines who wins a sick 24" HP Performance Display!
