CUT&PASTE GLOBAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2012

During 2011-12, we visited some of the world’s richest design capitals, holding live tournaments with over 150 talented creative pros. On Friday, November 16th, 35 of them converged on the Lower Eastside to compete in our Global Championship 2012. This playful new experiment featured live creativity fueled by audience-generated ideas.

We are proud to announce that the 2012 Global Championship title was awarded to the Tokyo 2D/3D competition team Takumi Yoza & Taiyo Yamamoto, and to New York's motion/animation competitor Stu Chudy!

COMPETITORS

The theme for the 2D/3D competition was "Break That Funk," where designers were to express how they would inspire someone who's experiencing a creative block. First, 3D designers had mere minutes to create a character. Then, the audience got to decide what happened to this character by suggesting a place, object, and action for that character. 2D/3D teams then chose from submitted ideas to use in their 2-framed, finished compositions, which they designed using HP computers, the official PC of Global Champs. Based on a creative brief, each designer was to create a single, 15-second video during an eight-hour competition round.

PRIZES

Each member of the winning 2D/3D team and the motion/animation champ received a HP DreamColor Display, and each of the 2D/3D and motion/animation runners-up received a HP IPS Monitor.

AUDIENCE CHALLENGE

This year, we have had a special audience design contest in collaboration with charity: water and sponsored by Adobe to drive awareness for an important problem: access to clean water for all.

Right now, one billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water. On mycharity: water, you can run, bike, or give up birthday presents to raise money to fund water projects for communities in need, and 100% of all donations directly funds water projects. Every dollar donation is linked to a water project and proved with photos and GPS. Now, charity: water seeks the help of the Cut&Paste design community for fresh ideas.

The Challenge: In a 15-minute offstage round, sketch a graphic that represents an activity you would do to raise money for clean water using the iPad and Adobe Ideas app, provided at Cut&Paste. The winner from all global entries receives the opportunity to work on a charity: water campaign. Click for more details and take a look at some designs from Global Champs 2012:

To remember the night, HP hosted a creative photo booth. While getting their exclusive Global Champs photo, they were able to enter to win a 24” Performance Display! Check out these fun photos from our Global Champs audience:
